Stepping Out

He stepped out of the overcrowded club; the cool rain was welcomed. Only the sound of the saxophone cut through the city’s beat.

He took a long drag from a cigarette, enjoying the spike of its poison; the rest of his body was comfortably numb from celebratory shots.

The blue neon light lent a glow to the side alley. He waited and wondered if his revelation had been desired. So many ways this could go wrong.

He couldn’t see the band on his hat turn green, but he felt the warm lick up his neck.

He shivered.

“Shall we go?”
